About the Artist
Hi, I’m Eileen Balsom Matthews, I live and paint in New Perlican on the beautiful Baccalieu Trail. I grew up in historic Heart’s Content in a fishing and boat building family of many generations.
After a long and successful banking career we retired to my husband William’s hometown where I found the desire to paint. New Perlican has a sheltered harbour with 20 plus colorful fishing stages, the most beautiful place in NL! I began painting the stages on slate. Now I do varied and custom work on canvas, glass, slate, rock & wood. I am mostly self-taught, I participate in workshops/ classes with various Newfoundland artists. I am totally inspired by the colorful surroundings; my colorful canvases tend to be mostly outport scenes.
My artwork is sold from this website and my FB or IG page; items can be packaged and shipped; shipping extra and glassware is at your own risk. My artwork is also available in many of the Arts/Crafts stores on the Avalon Pennisula and in Trinity or by booking a private appointment at my house. Contact me for commission work.
I am a member of NLOWE (Nfld & Labrador Organization for Women Entrepreneurs) and was recently appointed as an Ambassador for the organization. I am a Juried member of Craft Council NL, member of Legendary Coasts Tourism association, Citizen of Craft, Board member Baccalieu Trail Heritage Corp.; Vice Chairperson, Heritage New Perlican; Member of Mizzen Heritage Society, Heart’s Content, Treasurer of the Heart’s Content Development Corporation and various other volunteer activities in my area.
In 2017, I received the Federal Government Award for “Making a Difference” from Honourable Judy Foote, the then Member of Parliament. I have been featured on Eastlink TV’s “Discover NL” show (see blog posts for details).
